Top 20: Pentecost Chants, Hymns and Songs
A couple of weeks ago, I had invited my readership to participate in a survey of their favorite Pentecost worship songs and hymns. Now that Pentecost Sunday is upon us, it is time to reveal the results.
To reiterate, these hymns focus upon the events of Acts Chapter 2. Shortly after Jesus had ascended to heaven, the followers of Jesus, and Mary, His mother, were gathered in an “upper room” , to pray that God would send His Helper to them. This would be the Holy Spirit.
When the Holy Spirit came, it was with power. The disciples and Mary began to speak in tongues. Flames of fire rested upon their heads. But most importantly, the disciples had a courage to preach like they never did before. Peter, the one who had denied Christ three times on the night of His Passion, suddenly had a verve to address the many crowds that day, and 2,000 were added to their number by nightfall.
Pentecost Sunday remembers these events and encourages us to pray for the power of the Holy Spirit in our own lives. In fact, I would personally recommend singing such songs year round.
