Those #ThingsJesusNeverSaid twitter posts
TruthRevolt has an article talking about the Twitter trend #ThingsJesusNeverSaid, as a way for some to highlight their discontent with those Christians who, in following their consciences, do not want to be supporting a sinful act.
The problem with the whole meme is that it ignores that Jesus pulled off a neat hat trick: he loved the outcast, the destitute, the sinners… but He also admonished them to not sin. He loved the people, but He also upheld the Law. He did not come to do away with the law (including those dictates specifically against homosexual acts, not to mention promiscuity, and taking the Lord’s name in vain), but He also came to die for our sins, so that we–all of us guilty–may be made whole.
But being forgiven is not a license to continue sinning. Instead, we need to run the race, to strive for holiness, to obey Jesus’ commands, to “go and sin no more.” It doesn’t mean will succeed in this, but it does mean that we are forgiven in our failings. Paul speaks of this deliberately in Romans 6-8.
Irregardless, it’s a free world, and nobody is required to follow Christ in His teachings. But twitter wars that claim to have the upper hand with a meme that slams Christian believers because of its stance on homosexual acts (note the lingo: this is not a stance against homosexual persons), are doomed to have any impact on the doctrine itself, and can foster confusion where it can instead be illuminating.
